Jacksonville - Saltwater Fishing Report

It seems the winter might finally be over. The water temp at the jetties yesterday was almost 68 degrees. The small bluefish have invaded the River and will quickly maul your expensive live shrimp and there's not much you can do about it. Just try to get the shrimp down deep quickly as the bluefish are mostly on the surface and in mid-depths. We caught our first spanish mackerel yesterday and a bunch of the small blues on the fly rod.
Good size reds continue to roam the big jetties and are suckers for a large live shrimp or mud minnow. We caught a 16# yesterday. They have bit consistently all winter, even in 46 degree water!

Sheepshead are spawning and are hungry for fiddlers, crabs or clams. The little jetties have been hot lately. Black drum are at the jetties and on and around deep hard bottom in the river. This is the time of the year when you might hook a monster drum.

It's difficult to float fish for trout with the blues around. With the water warming, lure fishing might be the way to go.We have been picking up nice yellowmouth sporadically. I've heard rumors of good catches of whiting both in the surf and in about 30 ft of water off the beach.

Good fishing!
