Jacksonville - Saltwater Fishing Report

I just spent a week down in the keys on vacation,

but I was able to slip out yesterday evening for a few hours. This is the time of year that the shrimp make there way from the upper St Johns River towards the ocean. I heard a few reports of shrimp showing up around the Dames Point Bridge area, which is a hot spot for nice sized Speckled Trout. I launched out of the River City boat ramp downtown and fished my way towards the east hitting a few docks and points along the way that usually hold trout. The first couple stops only produced a few small jacks and a couple trout in the 2lb range. There are some green algae still around the downtown Jacksonville waters, which is typical during late summer months when we have above normal rainfall.
I was able to find cleaner water as I fished closer towards the ocean, mainly around the Dames Point area. The top water trout action was better than I expected, with a nice 4 lb trout caught on a skitter walk plug to start the evening off.

Once the sun dropped below the western horizon, the action really fired up, with a trout or several explosive strikes on every cast.
Next week we will have a few days with high flood tides which should have the redfish pushed up in the flooded marsh tailing and feeding on crabs. The higher tides will be more prevalent for the next few months, especially around the full moon.
