Jacksonville - Saltwater Fishing Report
We had a nasty cold front move through this weekend which caused us to cancel our charters on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. On Monday the ocean was as nice as you could ask for and i was in desperate need of some salt therapy! We headed offshore looking mainly for black sea bass along with whatever else came our way. We had an eager crew who were just looking to have a great time without any expectations. About 3 miles from our original destination I noticed some activity on the bottom finder. I marked it as we passed over; I circled the boat around and drifted over it a couple times. When targeting Black Sea Bass drifting is my preferred method because the more ground you cover, the better. You just need to be drifting over live bottom and not sand. Black Sea Bass are structure oriented so you won't normally find them over the sand, unless they follow your baits as you drift. Our first few drops yielded throwback sea bass and a couple of keepers [over 13"]; that's when the red snapper took over. We caught and released several red snapper up to 12lbs along with some keeper sea bass. As the keeper sea bass began to wane, we left the red snapper chewing and moved around the rest of the day looking to fill our limit of black sea bass. We ended the day with 27 black sea bass, leaving us 3 short of the crew limit of 30. We also kept a couple of atlantic sharpnose sharks for the grill along with a couple ringtail porgies and another white bone porgy. The crew had plenty of fish coming over the rail and four ziplock baggies of filets to take home with them. Great day on lake atlantic!
