Jacksonville - Saltwater Fishing Report
Fishing along the Intracoastal Waterway and backwaters has been outstanding for redfish, black drum and speckled trout. We have been experiencing lower than normal tides due to the full moon and south winds, which have the redfish tightly schooled together. South of Jacksonville to St Augustine I have been fishing a big school of redfish right along the waterway. Most of the reds are over the slot (27") and will give a serious workout to anglers and tackle. There is a lot of bait along the Intracoastal Waterway, which has also got the attention of bluefish and trout.
North of Jacksonville the redfish are feeding along oyster shell beds and along edges of sandbars in the backwater creeks. I've found most success fishing the last of the falling and first of the incoming tide in areas where there are small finger mullet small glass minnows. Small 1/8 oz and ¼ oz jigs tipped with shrimp are still the preferred tackle choice if you want to keep it simple.
Speckled trout have shown up in huge numbers, along the St Johns River and Mill Cove. High moving water near drop offs, docks, rocks, and points will produce a fish almost every cast. This type of fishing is fast and furious and requires a "chunk and wind" approach. Soft plastic shad type baits will draw strikes when fished in an erratic stop and go motion. The weather and water are warming up, and the fishing remains red hot.
