Looking for Quality on the Slow Days

Jacksonville - Saltwater Fishing Report

The last few days have been quite the challenge. With a front working it's way down to Florida we have had some very high wind to deal with this past week. I have been a little spoiled the last few weeks with the fish really starting to feed good and only having to move once or twice in a six hour trip…..
It is too bad that everyone can't have that banner day on the water but that is the way it is and there will always be a slow day. On the slow days I pray for good quality fish if the numbers are going to be low. I don't always get my way!!!!!!!
Wednesday the 7th fishing with David Johnson it was one of those days. We caught several small fish and had 4 nice fish hooked up and only boated one. Those are not very good odds. The thing with big Trout is there is always a chance of them coming loose before they get to the boat. I did find some nice size Lady fish to pull some string for us and do a little air show…..

Saturday the 10th fishing with John Meuschke from south Florida we were right up against the front. John is a very avid angler and has fished in many places and almost all of south Florida. I told him what we were up against and that I would be happy with a few quality fish. Being a fisherman he totally understood what we were up against and was up for the challenge…

I started out at a spot where I knew there was some quality Trout but they just didn't want to eat. We had one nice Trout on for a second put he pulled loose. We ended up catching 3 small Trout later in the trip.

I decided to sit on a couple schools of Redfish and try to salvage the trip with some line pullers. Well that worked out just great for us. We didn't catch many but we did boat 2 24 inch Reds and one 20 inch Red. But there was a bonus fish in the mix as well.

This is the time of year the Flounder start moving in and most of the fish are on the small side. I target the larger Flounder in the fall. It is not out of the question to catch some nice Flounder this time of year but not a lot like the one John caught today. It was the bonus of the trip. A 4.5 pound Flounder to add to the 3 nice Reds.

That is what I mean when I know it is going to be a challenging day on the water and I pray for the few fish we catch to be NICE!
Thanks for a great time John, Capt. James Howard
