Jacksonville - Saltwater Fishing Report

Well February finally caught up with us this past week. We had a full moon along with some kind of an eclipse and the tides we were running extreme and hard….
I did 4 trips last week into this past Monday and every day got a little better. The water temp is now about 63 degrees and the bait is starting to show up a little.
Right now there are hundreds of Blue fish but most of them are so small they just bite the tail off of your plastic and can't get the hook. It is worth trying them when you see the birds but if you can't hook'em up move on and try to find some larger ones.
The best tide has been the lower end but we really didn't have that tide until late in the day so I didn't get to fish it much last week.
Each trip produced some small Trout and Blue fish and I have been getting a few small Flounder also. That is a good sign. I have had a hard time getting the good slot size Red's to bite but the 18 to 19 inch ones have been steady and then several oversized ones in the river in 20 to 30 feet of water.

I'm still catching most of my fish with the white and green 4 inch curl tail on a quarter ounce jig mostly in the deeper water. In the creeks it's been shrimp on the jig heads.

March should bring a lot of changes as it always does and that will be very welcome. The Spanish should show up along with the spawning Sheepshead. The larger Trout will start getting more aggressive along with the Red fish. I will have lots of reports coming up as business is starting to take off again and you can count on getting the straight facts from me as always…..

Until next time tight lines Capt. James Howard
