Red Snapper Season 2017 - Jacksonville, FL

Capt. Chad Starling
October 30, 2017
Jacksonville - Saltwater Fishing Report

2017 Red Snapper Season Open NOV 3,4,5,10,11,12. In Jacksonville Fl, we have one of the best Red Snapper fisheries in the world, literally. For the past 7 years red snapper has been closed to harvest; during that 7 years, we had what the government calls "seasons". These "seasons" usually range from 7-10 days per year, with no make-up due to bad weather dates. These "seasons" have only been allowed 2 of the past 7 years. With that said, we've had effectively about 10 days to fish for red snapper over the past 2,555 days (7 years). Introduction to the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council (SAFMC); this agency is responsible for the conservation and management of fish stocks within the federal 200-mile limit of the Atlantic off the coasts of North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and east Florida to Key West. The role of the council is to develop fishery management plans needed to manage fishery resources within federal waters. The area encompassing federal waters, sometimes referred to as the Exclusive Economic Zone or EEZ, extends offshore from state waters (three miles in the South Atlantic) to 200 nautical miles. The SAFMC is a what I consider a subsidiary of NOAA. SAFMC claims to do the research and makes recommendations to NOAA to either keep fisheries closed or open them. NOAA takes this recommendation and either approves or disapproves. This year NOAA decided to be generous (sarcasm) and give us 6 days to harvest Red Snapper. The Red Snapper Dates are Nov 3,4,5,10,11,12. We have available trips available for these dates so get set up while we still have availability.
