Fishing Jacksonville & Mayport

Capt. Bryan Russell
October 14, 2005
Jacksonville - Saltwater Fishing Report

The word on the rocks and the beach is MULLET! They are pouring out of the St. Johns by the ton. What does that mean? It means That the Biggest, badest eating machines are right behind them!

Redfish, Jacks, cobia, Tarpon and kingfish all have the feedbag on right now. from the jetties south along the beach, fish of every specie are crashing mullet. You can stand on the Jax Beach pier and watch this amazing phenomenon take place. Gosh i love this time of year! where else would you rather be than in the middle of millions of mullet being hammered by 30 lb. redfish?

Ok. i'll calm down and give you the rest of the scoop........ The inshore wrecks and reefs are starting to load up on red snapper and grouper( it would be nice for the never ending nor’easter to go away. hard bottom within 10 miles of the beach is where the snapper and grouper will be setting up shop over the next couple of weeks. As the water temp drops look for the inshore numbers to heat up.

At the St. Johns jetties I’m seeing RED, (as in Redfish) good numbers of fish up into the 40 lb. range are eating mullet at the stones. Cut mullet and ladyfish as well as quartered Blue crabs are the ticket there. Make sure to take plenty of time to revive our breeder reds. also try not to hold a redfish up with a lip tool, unless you support it well with your other hand. It puts too much stress on the fishes spine.

Inshore its Trout time. in the dames point or mill cove area pin a live shrimp on a float rig on the channel breaks for some fine eating speckly trout. also you will catch some nice flounder around the docks in the river, you can find lots of nice sized flounder on the outside of the south jetty.

'Til next time, tight lines and screamin' drags, Capt. Bryan
