Jacksonville - Saltwater Fishing Report
January 18 Fishing Report Jacksonville Area Waters
We are definitely in our winter weather pattern, ie., windy, cool days followed by a two or three day warm-up period. The fishing has actually been pretty good during the less windy, warmer days.
Last week I had one day with approximately 60 speckled trout. Another day we caught five nice reds in the back country with the largest, a 31" fish, caught on fly. Generally speaking, there are smaller but more plentiful trout in the creeks, and larger fish in the river and at the jetties. The yellowmouth trout have also made an appearance, particularly at the jetties. These fish are taking both artificials and live shrimp.
The jetties are also giving up sheepshead, slot and larger redfish, bluefish, a few drum, and ringtail porgies. Whiting are biting in the surf and on the new Jax beach pier. They are ranging in size from small to around two lbs.
I'm enjoying sight fishing the flats for cruizing reds with light tackle or fly tackle. The trick is to time the tides so the flats are relatively warm midday. The reds are a bit lethargic, but a well presented offering can usually entice a strike.
