Sticking the Big Flattie!!!!

Capt. James Howard
November 15, 2008
Jacksonville - Saltwater Fishing Report

November is certainly the best month for Flounder fishing and gigging. I have lost a lot of gigging trips because our water has been dirty off and on for a while this year. The trips I have been able to do have involved a lot of moving around and not a lot of Flounder but some nice ones.

That's the deal with gigging. You have to kind of be on hold and able to go at the last moment when the tide and water are right…

Over the years I have learned what works best for me. I like the last hour of out going and the first 2 hours of in coming tide. I also like that tide to be in the early morning before day light instead of early evening.

I think the longer it has been dark the more the Flounder will move in closer to the shallows. There is nothing like rolling up on a nice Flounder buried up in the mud!!!

You have seen the 8 lb stud I gigged earlier this year which you don't see many of until this time of year and even then you might not gig an 8 pound Flounder very often but a lot of 3 to 5 pound Flounder which are very nice fish.

On a gigging charter last Friday night November 7th with Phil Baker it was the same old song. We found one area where the water clarity was good and even though there weren't a lot of Flounder there the ones that were laid up were big-ums!!! I mean an average of 5 pounds.

There was one odd ball also which ended up being the largest Flounder ever gigged on my boat and for sure the largest my client has ever gigged. (9.5 pounds.) That's right 9.5 pound Flounder gigged by Phil. The look on his face was priceless when we rolled up on that fish.

Thanks for a great time Phil and hope to see you soon.
