It's only WIND!!!!!!!

Capt. James Howard
March 10, 2008
Jacksonville - Saltwater Fishing Report

Well we have enough wind already this March to last us a month or so and it is only the 10th. You have to expect it this time of year and if you can fish it is often quite a challenge. As you know I drag a lot of plastics this time of year and they won't work if they are not bumping along the bottom very slow. That is hard to accomplish when the wind is putting a big bow in your line. Adding weight will help but it will hang up more than it will ease along……

I don't do a whole lot of jetty fishing but I have several friends that do and are very good at it. I was invited to go Drum fishing last week with them and it was tough. First the 5 to 10 knot wind was really 15 steady and it was a little cold. We fished about 6hrs catching 7 Black Drum and 2 nice Sheepshead. Of course out there you can always count on a few Toad fish and some other strange species. It was fun but not quite on fire.

Thursday brought the wind and rain again and I mean the wind was brutal thru Saturday and yes it got cold again. I had a trip with a group of guys from Atlanta on Sunday. They didn't mind the cold or the wind which was a lot lighter than the last few day's but still pretty stiff!!!

It was pretty much the same for me. I had to burn a lot of gas and just couldn't get the fish fired up. There is still plenty of small Blue fish but they are only big enough to mess up a good plastic. They are a great fish to catch when they get in the 2 pound range but more of a pain when they can't get the hook in there mouth. We caught sever Small Trout and a hand full of Rat Reds. Even the Rat reds were spotty. They aren't big but you can usually catch a bunch of them but not that day. A few here and a few there.

One thing I have come to realize after all my years of fishing in North Florida which is a lot more than I want to admit because it will show my age but some days are better than others. But you keep right on going.

Out of all the moving and small fish we did bag one nice Trout but a great time was had by all just being out on the water and catching a few fish.

Jacksonville Fishing Forecast:

The Drum and Sheepshead are off and on mainly because the wind is making it hard to fish them. A few larger Trout are starting to show. There has been bait pods at the jetties which means the Spanish should show up soon. A few Flounder and the Reds are still a little picky.

Target Species:

Drum/Sheepshead/Reds/Trout/Spanish
