Jupiter & Palm Beach Offshore Saltwater Fishing Report

Capt. Rob Mazzei
November 23, 2001
Jupiter - Saltwater Fishing Report

Jupiter Offshore Fishing

Release flags are flying high off the outriggers of many sportfishing boats targeting sailfish offshore Jupiter and Palm Beach Inlets.

While the bite has not been red hot, some boats have had as many as 4-5 catches(releases) and have had as many more bites. Last Thursday and Friday while fishing with Capt John on the "No Slack", we went 2 for 3 and 1 for 2 respectively. Most boats targeting sails are slow trolling live goggle eyes.

The fish have been scattered, anywhere from 85 out to 500 feet of water. We concentrated our efforts in 350 ft. We found a nice color change with a temperature break. There seemed to be an absence of baits in the area, in turn we had no strikes there.

We did see several frigate birds overhead but they were just watching and waiting too.

There were reports on the VHF radio that a white marlin was caught 9 miles off Palm Beach Inlet.

Dolphing fishing has been decent with fish to 20lbs. The color change and scattered weeds have had some fish on them. We trlolled them up with ballyhoo, strip baits and rigged mullet. The same depths the sails have been in is where we've caught the dolphin. Off the Hobe Sound, the loran tower produced fish in 280 ft.

Kingfish have been spotty but I have seen some fish to 40lbs. at the dock. 100 ft from "Lost Tree" to the Juno Pier has been OK.

Jupiter Inshore Fishing

Around the inlet has been a little slow due to rough seas and dirty water. Some pompano have been caught from south of the inlet to the Juno Pier. Sand fleas or peeled shrimp work best.

Bluefish and spanish mackerel have been in and out of the inlet at times.

North of Jupiter, at Peck's Lake the spanish mackerel have invaded the area. Either looks for birds working or use your sonar to mark them. When the ocean has been rough, they've been hard to locate.

Palm Beach Offshore Fishing

The same depth and areas have applied to those boats sailing from Palm Beach Inlet. From the Lake Worth Pier to the "Breakers" has produced dolphin and sailfish as well as north off Juno.

Palm Beach Inshore Fishing

Coming through Palm Beach Inlet we observed birds wheeling and diving on the surface. Spanish mackerel were busting on bait on the surface. I'm sure jack and bluefish were present too.

I haven't fished the "turning basin" recently, but I know the tarpon and big cudas will be there soon.

There are still tons of finger mullet behind Munyon Island. I caught jack at the "Burnt Bridge" on several occassions and have seen mullet getting pushed up onto the rocks by marauding schools of jack crevelle.
