Jupiter - Saltwater Fishing Report
Smoke'em up!
That's what the tarpon did to my Penn 706Z spinning reel's drag. The last several nights have been incredible at the Jupiter inlet. When I'm not charter fishing I've fishing at night. The mullet have been thick at certain stages of the tide and right behind them have been 100lbs+ tarpon. I went through three outfits the and seven Bomber plugs last several nights. I've had run home and grab a new rod two times. It's nice living 5 miles from the beach.
I've been using 20lbs spinning outfits and casting from the south jetty and have gotten my "booty kicked"! I have hooked six tarpon and have lost every one. I've had fish on for thirty minutes or so, only to have them make a strong run and jump and bust the twenty lbs. main line. A little disappointing but edreneline(spelling) rush has been well worth it.
While the full moon is diminishing, it seems that as the tide comes in and the moon rises so do the fish's appetite. I just got back from the inlet and the tide was low and the sky was dark, no fish! If they are there, you'll know it. The sound of fish that size crashing bait on the surfuce will interupt the steady rythym of the tide like a train wreck. Try to re-tie a knot with that kind of action! I actually sped to Wal-Mart to get more Bomber plugs. It was hard to keep my composure waiting in line at 12:30 am. When I got back they were still biting. Sweet!
I met Patrick and Chris from the Lake Worth and Boca areas and they cashed-in on the action as well. Both members of the West Palm Beach Fishing Club, Patrick was very disappointed to learn there was no film in the camera when Chris took a photo of the 110+lbs'er he beached using 100lbs braid and a Bomber plug. Sorry guy, I'll vouch for you in the fishing club contest.
Besides that memorable fishing action all else applies the last weeks report regarding offshore.
I'm no "hotshot guide", just a guy who loves fishing and does so 300 days a year! And I don't see many of the money maker guides any where around the beaches bending a rod when it's too rough outside.
