Jupiter & Palm Beach Offshore Saltwater Fishing Report

Capt. Rob Mazzei
August 7, 2003
Jupiter - Saltwater Fishing Report

King's rule Jupiter!

The kingfish bite has been outstanding almost a stone's throw from the mouth of Jupiter inlet. The fish have been abundant and aggressive well into the late morning hours. Most fish are in are in the high teens with larger fishing being caught as well. An unconfirmed report(rumor) was a women fishing with her two kids caught a 60 pounder while fishing aboard the Blue Heron drift boat in Jupiter. Nice!

This week we haven't fished deeper than 100 feet. Most king bites have come from the 70-90 feet range by drifting live baits. After several unsuccessful dolphin trips out to a 1000 feet we've stayed in close.

We got our first sailfish in 2-3 weeks. He ate a goggle eye intended for kings, rigged with a #6 wire leader and stinger hook. Who says sailfish are leader shy? All of the sailfish we've caught this summer have been caught using Mustad 9174 hooks and either #4,5 or 6 wire. Nothing fancy. The sail was caught in 80 feet east of Jupiter inlet.

Bonito are still thick pretty much everywhere.

Expect wahoo the turn on with the full moon approaching. The forecast is for calm seas this weekend so break out the wire line, planers and/or downriggers and do some high speed trolling.

Snook fishing tapered off the last few days. I was walking at the south jetty late last week and many fish were caught before sunset and the snook were blowing up on schools of pilchards. Of course the scene was not repeated the next evening when I had brought my rod.

Lots of mangrove snapper around the rocks at the inlet and pompano along the beach just south of the jetty.

Weekend looks great. See ya out there.
