Jupiter & Palm Beach Offshore Saltwater Fishing Report

Capt. Rob Mazzei
December 2, 2003
Jupiter - Saltwater Fishing Report

Holiday Sails!

Sailfish are here and the bite is on. We went 5 for 9 over the last three days out of Jupiter inlet. We have fished from Lost Tree to Hobe Sound, from 250 to 60 feet of water. They are scattered everywhere. All of our bites have been singles, no doubles, and they were caught drifting and slow trolling small blue runners and goggle eyes. Two days we fished were near calm conditions which made kite fishing not possible.

And the wind came, again! NOAA is predicting extremely rough seas and posted a small craft advisories for all week. Whick stinks because fishing has been outstanding.

Kingfish have shown up with some regularity, we are seeing and hearing dolphin and wahoo reports as well. But was has been the most rewarding has been the bottom fishing.

We've caught mutton snapper over 10lbs. and many fat yellowtail snapper. We've caught only smaller grouper but other boats have caught some large ones.

Our routine is as follows: Once live bait is acquired we'll run east and looks for prime conditions out to 300 feet. Depending on current speed and wind direction we'll set up a drift accordingly. Two live baits go out on flat lines(no weight)one short, one long. If there is enough of a breeze, the kite goes up and two live baits go out suspended on the surface. That's four baits out 2 up wind and 2 down wind. We'll drift and wait, if nothing happens we'll change depth slow trolling the live baits. Once we're in depths of around 120 feet we will then send dead sarines down on triple hook rigs to see who lurking below.

Of course then it happens, when everybody is busy and distracted the live bait rods will go off and the mayhem begins.

Spanish mackerel are thick at Peck's Lake for those who want steady light tackle action.

Spinner sharks are arriving off the beach.

Happy Holidays and good fishing to all.
