Jupiter & Palm Beach Offshore Saltwater Fishing Report

Capt. Rob Mazzei
April 7, 2004
Jupiter - Saltwater Fishing Report

Spring’s Supreme!

After a long, tough winter of waiting for a sailfish to eat our $5 a piece live bait, the windy days and rough seas are almost gone. Even tough this season was our best fishing for sails, it’s time to say good bye. What’s next, you maybe wondering? There’s a lot to talk about.

Spanish sardines and threadfin herring (greenies) have been showing up outside Jupiter Inlet and off the Juno pier. Not real thick yet, but enough to get started.

Our spring time fishery pretty much revolves around our ability to catch enough live bait to last the whole day. Once the schools of bait migrate into the near shore waters along the coast all hell breaks loose. Predators migrating along our coast will come in harass the baits schools.

Tarpon should start running north along the beach and snook will start making their way towards the beach and inlets. Early morning is the best bet, before the boat traffic gets too bad. Permit have been showing up on the near shore wrecks. They’ll ignore a live bait, but will generally inhale a live crab without hesitation. Fishing Headquarters in Jupiter sells live crabs for those interested.

Offshore will produce a great variety of specie, such as dolphin, kingfish, cobia, blackfin tuna, false albacore(bonito), amberjack, snapper, grouper, sharks and more. Every year reports of blue marlin come in as well. Send out live baits in 100-250 feet of water and one never knows what will show up for lunch.

“I just serve up the menu, I don’t invite the guests!”

Gotta go fishing, I will update later today.
