Jupiter & Palm Beach Offshore Saltwater Fishing Report

Capt. Rob Mazzei

Jupiter - Saltwater Fishing Report

Sails, Kings and Sabiki's

Get out early and have a bunch of sabiki's! That's all the advice one needs to score big off the Palm Beaches. These past few weeks, we've fished from the Woolbright Tower to the Breakers. Kingfish, sailfish, dolphin, blackfin tuna and wahoo have been caught (and are being caught) throughout the area.

Live baits have been thick outside of Boynton Inlet, as well as along the beaches. It seemed the later in the morning you get there, the tougher they are to catch, which may be due to boat traffic. We try to get out before sun up and as long as the tide is moving, the Spanish sardines and threadfin herring have been eager to bite sabiki rigs. There have been silver mullet on the inside of Boynton as well. You need to have your cast net ready.

The sailfish have been caught off the Woolbright Tower, south of the inlet, Ritz Carlton and the Lake Worth pier. I can't say that they have been concentrated, their action has occurred from 90 feet out to 200. We haven't gone out specifically targeting sailfish, but any time you set out a spread of live baits, a sailfish is likely to show for breakfast!

When the wind is blowing from the east, start out in 200 feet and drift in. West wind (not my favorite), do the opposite.

Dolphin have been holding mainly north of the Lake Worth pier. Trolling ballyhoo or strip baits will almost always get some attention. When using a strip bait, put a sea witch skirt over it, pick up your speed and a wahoo is a good bet. If you don't find a weedline, there may be a blue water edge where the gulfstream meets the greener inshore water. Troll along the edge looking for signs of fish or surface debris. Have some lighter outfits ready with jigs or plain hooks to be used as pitch baits in case a fish shows around the boat.

Kingfish, blackfin tuna and cobia are being caught in the same areas, only slightly inshore. 105 feet was our most productive depth for kingfish. Congratulations to Rocky McCollumb who fished out of Jupiter inlet. He reported catching a 70-pound wahoo and a 35-pound dolphin trolling ballyhoo.

Remember, keep your lines tight and good fishing!

Captain Rob
