Jupiter & Palm Beach Offshore Saltwater Fishing Report

Capt. Rob Mazzei
June 22, 2000
Jupiter - Saltwater Fishing Report

Marlin off The Palm Beaches

As soon as I reported on the calm weather and the summertime ocean conditions off the Palm Beaches, Boca Raton to Jupiter, high pressure developed off the coast, causing the wind to blow a steady 10-15 knots out of the east. While not necessarily a boating hazard, conditions kept many of the smaller vessels inside the inlets. Those willing to endure the 2-4 foot, 2-3 seconds apart seas may have felt a little beat up, but they were definitely not disappointed.

The breezy conditions and lack of rainfall have created near perfect conditions offshore, inshore and inside the as well. Easterly wind direction has pushed the clear, deep blue gulfstream right up along the shoreline and the fact that the spillways have not been open for sometime now, due to near drought conditions, even the intracostal is clear in most areas (relatively speaking).

The baitfish have been abundant in most areas and the gamefish have been also. I've caught dolphin in 62 feet, just north of the Palm Beach Inlet. I've heard first hand that a 200#+ Blue Marlin was caught and released on 20# tackle, slow trolling a live bonita in 100 feet of water off Jupiter. Three other Marlin landings have also recently been reported. Many Wahoo have been caught in the same area. My buddy Martin has been sabiki'in up bait around the Juno Pier. Mostly snapper fishing, he's landed 2 wahoo drift fishing dead Goggle eyes. He said the area is loaded up with yellowtail snapper and he's also caught some Lane Snapper and Muttons. If the yellowtail is of legal size and you don't mind sacrificing dinner for one, put him back out with a piece of wire ahead of the hook and a smoker kingfish or monster barracuda is almost guaranteed. 100 feet of water, from the pier to the Jupiter inlet has been red hot.

I've fished mostly from Boynton Beach inlet north to the Palm Beach inlet. The baitfish have been thick and the good dolphin bite has continued. 160 feet has been a consistent depth, but it depends on where the bluewater edge meets the greener inshore water. One day it may be in close and the next in 700 feet of water.

Sailfishing has been outstanding, probably better than this past winter. Again, work the edge and the rips. From Boynton to the Lake Worth pier, we've seen many free jumpers on the inshore side of the edge. Live baiting has produced and so has trolling.

Blackfin Tuna have been off the Delray Beach area. Usually it's a 10:1 bonito to tuna ratio, but when the rods bent and the drag is screaming who cares? Fishing has been excellent up and down the coast, so get out and enjoy it! Don't forget the sunscreen!!!

Good Luck! My new phone # as of Sat. 6/24 is 561 741-4371 Capt. Rob Mazzei Sail King Fishing Charters
