Winter Time Sails

Capt. Colin Hickey
December 30, 2010
Jupiter - Saltwater Fishing Report

During the last few cold snaps the sailfish action has been great. Monitoring the wind and current conditions has been essential to success though. Fishing on NNW, N, and NE winds have yielded drastically better results then fishing on winds out of the south or southwest. This is usually the case with sails, however, the drastic difference between the amount of sails raised, depending if there is current or not, is truly magnified this season. Will be getting out tomorrow to fish a semi-calm E-SE wind (10knts) and will have more updates.

Along with sails has been a mixed bag of dolphin and kingfish. Blackfin tuna are being caught in greater depths and reports of an occasional wahoo mixed with them has been the case. I have primarily been targeting the sails between 115ft-175ft or if there is a defined temp change or rip. Along the beach there has been a presence of Cobia and Mackerel.

Air Temps will be a low in the 50's and high in the 70's for the next week or so. We will see if the typical winter temps this week (instead of freakishly cold-cold snaps) turns the switch off...
