Fishing the Islamorada swordfish tournament this past weekend took a turn in a different direction. Fishing a flat calm night of Pig Pine Key we drifted 5 squid at different depths in hopes of a Swordfish. But at 11:30 when the reel started to scream i grabbed the rod and began the fight. Hoping for a Sword we worked the fish gently as possible, but that was not working. The fish began to sound to the bottom, 1400 ft. With about 100 ft to spare the fish stopped. I began to reel and the fish turned and came strait to the surface and jumped, somewhere, we could not see it because it was so dark. After a fight on the surface and still believing it was a sword the fish sounded again and died. I pumped for another hour to finally see the fish. At first glace we thought we had the tournament winner. Not to be! It was this 269 pound Blue Marlin. We tried for sometime to revive the fish but it was showing no life at all. Most likely it died at the bottom and i reeled it up dead. The fish did not go to waste though, it was given for food to a local charity, and spread out among the crews at the dock. We did also manage to catch a swordfish in the 80 pound class and on the second night I caught another sword in the 100 pound class which gave a 3 way tie for 3rd. Based on time we ended up in 5th.
