Key Biscayne - Saltwater Fishing Report

Great Tournament,Best though for the Team

SEA HUNTER

Record Breaking Weekend

Friday was the starting day of the Miami Billfish Tournament, the winds were brisk and the sailfish were snapping. Fishing the Dr. J our Tournament boat we started to the

North, were we had seen a lot of fish the previous days. Not knowing what might be in the area as far as Dolphin and Kingfish we brought plenty of bait, thank God! As the first little bait hit the water we knew we were in trouble with the Big Kings. We went through around 30 Goggle Eyes in the First hour. We did catch a few nice Kings in the 20-pound range; they were in the area of the North spar buoy and from 60 to 150 ft. I also heard of lots of Kings south off the Monument Can. They did slow down as the Weekend progressed. Anyway, as the day went on we located the Sailfish in the 120-ft. range and stayed there and caught 4 for the day. Fishing for the first time a Lady angler, Debbie David, we were doing well. She was in the top 3 or 4 going into the second day. Day two we started off OK with a Sailfish around 10 and then going the entire day with out seeing another fish until 3 seconds were left, bang there he was, I was just able to get the call in before the day was called history. The second day was very consistent for a lot of the boats, the fish were out just a bit deeper than the previous day with most seen in the morning in 125 and by afternoon out to 190. The fish were biting Live Herring the best.

Kings on day two were snapping in the morning but slowed down by afternoon. We were dropping a bit in the standings but still had a good shot. Debbie is now leading in the Lady’s category, but still wanting it all. Day three we left the dock with high expectations, we thought we had figured out were they were and how we were going to get them. Wrong, we set up to the north and had three boats to the north of us catch fish, we thought the group of fish was going to swim though us but we never got a bite the whole day. Bad Luck for us but the Boat Sea Hunter had the luck this day. They boated 8 fish the last hour to take the lead and the tournament. They fished South off Fowey and saw most of the fish in the 120 to 160 ft. range. In the end it was a Great Tournament, 407 fish were caught and you can only imagine how many were seen. Congratulations to the winning team.

Out look: This week should be good fishing with Sailfish and Kings stealing the show. Fish in close for the Kings and if you are looking for sailfish bump out just a bit. Bait has been OK at Bug Light but more consistent to the north in the Cut.
