Miami and Key Biscayne – offshore

Capt. Quinton Dieterle
April 12, 2001
Key Biscayne - Saltwater Fishing Report

Blue Fish Madness

A strong southeast wind and a south current caused a mixed up choppy ocean today.

The fishing on the most part was slow except for the sudden occurrence of giant Blue fish. The Blue fish were in 375 ft and spawning. The ocean was white due to the spawning, the fish and were actively striking anything that hit the water. It was an incredible site to see this spawning activity. The frantic Blue fish attracted not only all the boats out today buy plenty of sharks and I’m sure other species we did not see. We spotted a Giant Hammerhead, a couple dozen Bull Sharks and a Thresher Shark. all in a feeding frenzy. I can’t explain how incredible it was. After the Blue fish we encountered two large Cobia cruising on the surface and caught them. They were in the 40-pound range. Next we put out the Kites and caught several nice kings; they were in 80 to 125 ft. south of the beacon. Then we decided to work our way home and look for more Cobia on the surface, we found one but it did not eat. We stopped and caught a large Amberjack on the Sir Scott Wreck and called it a day. There were several sailfish caught, but on the most part it was slow for sails.

I’ll be fishing the next two weeks strait so watch for our reports.
