Miami and Key Biscayne – offshore

Capt. Quinton Dieterle
August 9, 2001
Key Biscayne - Saltwater Fishing Report

Sailfish Moving North

As summer comes to an end the Dolphin are beginning to thin out and the Sailfish that have been spending the Summer in the Yucatan are going back home. Dolphin the last week have been tough, but if you are able to find some schools they have been big ones. The Schoolies have been in the 5 to 8 pound range and some up to 25. They have been in the area of 10 miles to the edge and are moving south quickly. The schools are big and the fish are quick to bite at first but slow down quickly. Chunks are working well at first but soon the only thing they touch is live bait. Small blue runners and pilchards are best. Birds and Floaters are the way we have been locating the schools. Sunday we caught 40 on birds and some scattered grass fishing on the CUTTING EDGE. Sailfish start their late summer migration to the north this time of the year and we caught our first one on Sunday. They will start to appear balling bait in the Eleven Hundred-foot range from now until late September. They are moving quickly to the north and usually will have Hawk Bird above them. That is how we caught ours on Sunday. The Sailfish had the Sardines Balled up and in a tight circle. The Sailfish circle the baits until they are tight and them crash the ball. It is an unbelievable sight. If you spot a ball of bait, toss live bait next to the sardines and hold on, the bite will soon follow. The fish are usually large, after spending all summer south in one place along with the quick growth of Sailfish they get big fast. Other action has been a few bonitos on the edge and a few kings. Good Luck and Tight Lines
