Miami and Key Biscayne – offshore

Capt. Quinton Dieterle
August 12, 2001
Key Biscayne - Saltwater Fishing Report

HOLD ON

Dolphin Surprise

Just as most of us were getting ready to put away all the Dolphin equipment and start getting ready for fall, Dolphin make a surprise showing. We had a few days last week that I search at least 100 miles of ocean and only found 15 dolphin, deeper than normal and shallower than normal, more north and more south, the Dolphin had disappeared. Then, on Friday the surprise began. Late in the day Jimbo on the Thomas Flyer was on his way in and found a slick, looked just like the last twenty he had been following the entire day except this one was full of Dolphin, cruising south at a good clip. Saturday the excitement continued as the Cutting Edge had their limit of 70 Dolphin by one o’clock. The fish were found on Floaters and on birds, just like in the beginning of the season. Except, the fish are all starting to get big, the average is over 5 pounds. Sunday I found out quickly that the action on the Cutting Edge was going to continue, the first Hawk bird we found produced a nice school of 4 to 5 pounders and the fish we eating good. Next we found a floater that yielded another 20 and that’s the way the day went, floater, birds and grass all producing fish. I did hear of a few large fish being caught though we did not see one. They were found on floaters, usually the first boat to one gets the larger fish.

Elsewhere the action has been slow, on the edge a few bonitos and a few kings. Night fishing has been producing some Yellow tails and mangrove snapper.

For the Divers Crawfish have been tough to find this year due mostly to the murky water and heavy boat traffic. As the water clears this would be a good time to take the kids while there are still some crawfish left.

Bait has been tough, and will be for a while, try to catch bait in the bay if you know any secret spots.

Good luck and if you are interested in fishing on the Cutting Edge give me a call or check my web page at www.miamicharterfishing.com (305) 361-9740
