Key Biscayne - Saltwater Fishing Report

Bait Migration In full Swing
Large schools of finger mullet silver mullet and sardines are moving south along the beaches and into Biscayne Bay. The schools of mullet can be seen as a large shadow moving quickly at times south. The sardines are usually seen causing a raining effect on the surface of the water and usually accompanied by flocks of sea gulls. Sardines are most often seen in the area of Hawk’s channel, where as the mullet can be found anywhere from the edge of the Gulf Stream to marina’s and waterways. All this action is a good sign, usually not far behind the bait are the predators. Large jacks tarpon and snook will be close behind. As the bait inshore moves south, bait you don’t always see is also moving south offshore. The fish we have been catching on the wrecks have all been eating sardines and the Sailfish offshore most of September were all balling sardines. By October, most of the sailfish are to the north and we don’t see as many offshore balling bait, but the bait is still there. Kingfish are another fish that follow the sardines south, and they are starting to show up now. Last week we only fished a few days but did see an increase in kingfish activity. The boats to the north and south are catching some kings in the morning and late in the day. They are in 75 to 150 ft. and are biting dead sardines and live pilchards and sardines. Other action offshore has been very slow. We fished the other day and had very little action, we tried the wrecks, the edge and offshore for dolphin and only caught 4 kings all day. That is slow for the Cutting Edge. With all the bait and some cooler weather moving south, the fishing should improve. If your going to try your luck in the next few days, the edge off the Monument Can has been best. Bait is around Bug Light and on the markers in the bay.
Good Luck and Tight lines
