Miami and Key Biscayne – offshore

Capt. Quinton Dieterle
November 11, 2001
Key Biscayne - Saltwater Fishing Report

Mixed Reports

If you fished the last couple of days you could have done well if you were in the right place at the right time and very poorly if you were not. Dolphin action on the edge was good until the weekend, Saturday and Sunday it slowed down. The fish were biting baits fished from the kites and on flat lines from the riggers. They have been traveling in small packs of 2 to 5 fish, and all nice size. Kings have been biting in the mornings, but usually shut down around eight, and then the action picks back up in the late afternoon. Some small kings have been around the boil and north off Miami Beach, but a lot have been to small. Cero Mackerel and some small Spanish Mackerel have been seen on the reef and around the markers in Hawk’s channel. They will bite small pilchards and slow trolled spoons. Sailfishing has been the big disappointment, I have heard of only a hand full caught in the last couple of days and the conditions have been right. A strong north current accompanied by blue water and a northeast wind should have them snapping. But the wait goes on. I have several trips scheduled this week for Sailfish hunters and I to am HOPING they show up, if not, I may be in for some long days. Bait fishing has also been on and off, with no reason to justify the inconsistency.

Now what do we need to get things going? A good cold snap with a blistering Northwest to North breeze that stays with us a few days, that’s my prediction.

Tight Lines
