Miami and Key Biscayne – offshore

Capt. Quinton Dieterle
January 11, 2002
Key Biscayne - Saltwater Fishing Report

Good Weather and Good Fishing

A nice day overall, The seas were calm and the fishing was good. In the morning it took us all of about 5 minutes to find the first school of Dolphin under a flock of gulls working a scattered weed line. We came out by the Sea buoy and the line was in 550 ft. There were a bunch of fish there but the customers had never fished before and it took a few trys to get things going. We managed to catch a tough 40 fish before the school left us. After the Dolphin we wanted to show the customers how the kite worked so we moved out to the blue water and set up. The good water was out in 450ft but we tried it anyways. Ten minutes is all it took and a sailfish was up on the short baits doing everything he could to catch the lively pilchard. Finally he caught it and we caught him. In the afternoon the Dolphin were gone and so we tried Sailfishing. The hunt began to the south off the becon and ended up inside the Sir Scott. One sailfish and 2 bonito was all we could manage in the Afternoon. But compared to the other boats we did damn good.

The sailfish that were caught to the south were in shallow and the ones to the north were out in 350 to 500 ft. Bait was tough and the water was clear.
