Miami and Key Biscayne – offshore

Capt. Quinton Dieterle

Key Biscayne - Saltwater Fishing Report

Sailfish Action Good

With clear water and a north current south of the beacon the Sailfishing took a swing in a positive direction. Ocean Reef reported good Sailfishing over the weekend and through out last week. The bite has been late in the day with some boats catching up to 5 and 6 fish a day. Today and Saturday the fishing was good to the north off Key Biscayne and Fowey. The Cutting Edge caught Sailfish on both trips and saw several more. At ocean reef the boats use Ballyhoo for bait, to the north we generally use Pilchards, Goggle eyes and Threadfins does it really matter what bait you use and where you use it? Well that has been a good and arguable question for years. We used to say that the guys to the south were lazy and they did not want to take the time to catch the baits we use and fly kites. But, after a few of the guys that said all those nasty things about our fellow fisherman left here to fish ocean reef became believers of Ballyhoo the questions arise again, do they like ballyhoo better in the keys? Or do the guys that left to go their just get lazy? I don’t think so, I think they just realize once there that the ballyhoo just work better to the south where the fish are used to eating ballyhoo. To the north the fish are eating baits that hang around wrecks and buoys, Bonito, goggle eyes, Speedo’s tinker mackerel and pilchards. That makes sense that the fish would be more likely to eat your kite baits that included one of those. I am not really sure which theory I stand by, one that the fish will eat anything if hungry or second will eat only what they are used to eating that day. I personally believe you have a great chance at getting the bite if the bait is lively and presented as natural as possible. The one exception to my theory is if you did see a group of fish balling sardines or pilchards or showering Ballyhoo the chances of getting the fish to bite is much greater if you toss a bait of the same specie they are eating. Several times I have not had ballyhoo and seen sailfish showering and could not get the fish to eat different bait. So, my advise is to try to have a variety of bait, try to use a variety of bait on each set up and try to decipher which is working the best that day then make the adjustment. Remember you can’t have some of every bait in the ocean, but you can have lively well-kept bait and present it naturally. So after all that is said, the fish where biting Speedo’s best today. Good Luck
