Miami and Key Biscayne – offshore

Capt. Quinton Dieterle

Key Biscayne - Saltwater Fishing Report

Marlin Maddness

Well if I needed a break before my trip to the Bahamas I did'nt know it, now that it is over I know I needed it. A bit different fishing for Blue Marlin than Sailfish. Now don't get me wrong I still love catching and releasing Sailfish, but nothing in the entire world beats Catching Marlin, well maybe one thing but well keep it clean. What Fun!! We started off fishing the Bertram/ Hatteras Shoot Out. It's the biggest and has the most Money and fame. It had been a while since I tried to complete in those big tournaments, but I had plenty of comfidence. The first day was our day, A 419 blue and a white to start off was not bad. Now if anybody has done this type fishing before you know fishing for marlin is not like sailfish. You may go days with out seeing a fish. So to start out like that we were thrilled. Now the second day proved not to be our day. One on sighting and we missed it. Still not bad for the bahamas, just seeing one. Third day also proved to be typical for the Bahamas except we had our chance and blew it. We had two bites and missed them both, also typical for lurer fishing. One proved to be to small to help anyways but now the other one might have helped. So we ended up 4th in the show. But feeling like hero's because we knew in a couple of days we would be back on the Cutting Edge to try again, but this time just for fun. A week of marlin fishing proved much fun for Dr. J and Crew. We boated and released 3 marlin, a 225, 200 and a small fish in the 150 range. Still it was a blast. Next year we are going to spend some time in Boat Harbor and charter. Call me to get the dates and rates. You would be able to fly in and stay as long as you want and fish as many days as you want. The boats doing that now are charging $1,200 per day. We are thinking more in the line of $1,000 per day . Any ways fishing back in Miami is stil red hot. Lots of Sailfish still here and plenty of kings and Bonito. The dolphin have not yet made a strong showing, which may prove to be nice, usually when they show late we have a good run into September or even October.
