Key Biscayne - Saltwater Fishing Report

Miami Fishing Report

Well fishing has been pretty decent the last few weeks. We have had a few trips and have managed some kingfish, small dolphin, some bottom fish, and some sailfish. This past weekend i had the opportunity to fish with a great group of guys. Steve, Gene flew into to meet Alex a good friend of theirs and to fish with me saturday and sunday.

Saturday morning the guys met me at the boat bright and early. We were off to bug light by 7am to pick up some baits. i decide to make the run way south to Pacific Reef since the Bob Lewis Sailfish Tourney was going on. On the way down i spot a tailer in 60 ft of water. We quickly pitch a bait out to him, and 10 minutes later we hook-up with him. Alex picks up the rod starts to crank and "snap" the line breaks! We quickly re-group and keep running south. We spot some fish balling up bait in shallow so we decide to start fishing in about 20 ft of water. On our first couple of drifts we managed a 15lb yellow jack, a cut-off and some mystery fish. The fishing never really got hot for us, so we decided to run offshore and to the north to look for some dolphin. We found lots of weeds but no dolphin. We ran back up to fowey and found some nice current and put the baits back out. After a series of drifts, we didnt have much to show for except for some small dolphin that showed up but were very finicky. We only managed to get 2 to bite, and only 1 was legal to keep. Steve spotted a huge tree in about 60 ft of water so we decided to investigate. As we pulled up we spotted some dolphin and pitched baits out, but had no takers. After about 20 minutes we were able to get a nice cero mack to bite. We ran back out and made our last drift. Some more chicken dolphin showed up that wouldnt eat, but we did manage a nice strawberry grouper on the botton rod. All in all it was a decent day out on the water.

Sunday we were hopeing for much better action. We ran to the cut loaded up on pilchards and ran out off the sea bouy in search of Mr. Sailfish. We get the baits out and manage a king on the first drift and thats it. A few drifts later catch a nice bonita on the mid water bait and a very nice 15lb mutton snapper on the bottom rod. At noon we made a move to the north, and made a few more dirft with only a few bites and nothing to show for them. We made a move to finish the day off of the monument bouy. We saw a free jumper, some more dolphin and managed a small mutton snapper that we released. At about 5pm on our last drift the guys talk me into a last minute sword trip.

We ran back to my house we quickly changed gear and we were off by 630. We made the 18 mile trek to the sword grounds and had the baits all out by 8:30pm. At around 10pm i noticed the 125ft balloon starting to head to the south. I quickly came tight but wasnt sure if there was a fish on or not. Steve took the rod and cranked it in, as i was pulling off the weight i saw the fish down in the light. As the fish came close and saw the boat, the fight was on. Steve did a great job and we boated the 60" fish in less than 20 minutes. We quickly regrouped and ran back to the south and set back up. At 11:45 the guys said 10 more minutes then we were calling it. @0 seconds later the tip rod bends over and we get tight on another fish. It was a nice fish dumping 100+ on the first run. Gene gets in the harness and the fight is on. 30 minutes later we have a huge Cuban Night Shark going 250lbs plus up. I leader the beast we snap a few pictures and cut him off to fight another day.

All in all it was a great weekend of fishing, even though we didnt get in a hot bite we still caught fish and had a great time, after that is what its all about. The guys had a great time and are looking to come back for another trip in june. With the moon coming up in the next week or so the sword fishing will pick up. I have some nights available still so give me a call and lets get out there! Until next time

Tight Lines and Calm Days,

Capt. Joe
