Key Biscayne - Saltwater Fishing Report
Miami Offshore 3-27 Hot Dolphin Bite
With the wind blowing the past few days out of the NE i was hopeing for some good fishing action offshore today. Today i fished with Adam Yunis from Miami he is one of my best costumers. We met at the dock at 7 and off we were to catch some bait. We ran up to the cut to look for pilchards and herring. We never found the pilchards but we picked at the herring for about an hour and caught plenty of bait for the day. At 8:30 we were off to the fishing grounds fighting some nice 5ft swells in the cut.
We head just to the south and set up in 300ft of water looking for some dolphin. As soon as i get the 3rd bait out we hook a nice schoolie on the bow flat line. We continued out the drift and picked at the dolphin. Pretty much all day long we had dolphin all over us and caught a few. We did a series of drifts and missed 1 nice bottom fish and caught a nice king. On our 4th drift we caught a nice mutton snapper about 8lbs and a nice dolphin going about 14lbs or so.
We decided to make 1 final drift before heading in at 3pm. We started out in 220ft of water and went all the way in to 115ft before we caught our first and only sail of the day. She was a beauty, one of the biggest of the year. She was at least 75lbs and 8-9ft long. Adam whipped her in just under 15 minutes with a perfect hook-set right in the corner of the jaw with the 8/0 circle. Circles are the way to go when looking for sailfish, not only do they hook up just about everytime. but they are much better on the fish. There is a much higher rate a survival for a fish that is caught with a circle over a J style hook. Final tally for the day is, 1 sail, 1 kingfish, 1 mutton snapper, and some nice dolphin. All and all it was another great day on the water.
I still have a few days open in April for tarpon, swords, sails, and dolphin. So give me a call and we will get out there and give her hell!
