Bonefish and Tarpon Unlimited

Capt. Dexter Simmons
October 7, 2008
Key West - Saltwater Fishing Report

The science of Bonefish and Tarpon are of great interest to many anglers, guides and students of the sport of catch and release fly fishing here in the Florida Keys. Bonefish and Tarpon Unlimited is a non profit organization whose mission is promulgate healthy populations of bonefish and tarpon for the future. Those of us who fish for Bonefish, Tarpon, and Permit (the flats grand-slam!)regularly know that these species of fish support the Florida economy with a multi-million dollar annual economic impact. But it is not just the dollars. The sheer joy of fly fishing for these powerful creatures in their natural habitat is beyond explanation for most anglers. I would like to see these species survive man made pressures so that my children and grand children have the opportunity to play with them if they so choose. So, visit their web site and sign up! Go to their web page: http://www.tarbone.org

I am currently volunteering my time on the flats to tag and release Bonefish and Tarpon. There is also an semi-annual Bonefish census that is happening this month that I am participating in. It is all about understanding the species more so that we may help protect them in the future. Having just returned from Turneffe Flats in Belize, I was really astounded by all the work of Craig Hays in his efforts to make Tarpon, Bonefish, and Permit catch and release only species. It is illegal to kill these three species in Belize. The same actions should be taken in Florida!!! This is my mission as I work in the future to protect the saltwater flats habitat in the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico.
