Much Better dolpin fishing in 2017

Capt. Richard Houde

Key West - Saltwater Fishing Report

Last year was a disappointing year for Dolphin or Mahi fishing to say the least. So far, there have been a lot of fish around. Not as many big fish as I would like, but plenty of school sized fish and a few big ones mixed in are making the offshore fishing well worth the trip. In addition, there have been a fair amount of Skip Jack and Black Fin Tuna also. Wahoo's have been a little bit scarce, but then again, there hasn't been much debris to fish. Mostly bird activity has been indicating where the Dolphin and Tuna are. Key West isn't a great Marlin Destination, Sailfish is our main Billfish, but there have been a fair number of White and Blue Marlin feeding on the schools of Dolphin. ON Monday, we had a nice bull Dolphin about 12-14 lbs. get eaten by a Blue Marlin. We had the Blue "on" for a while and it took a good bit of line out, but quite honestly, the hook was probably buried in the Dolphin and the marlin was just swimming away with it in his belly. Eventually it tail cut the line but it was a very cool bite to watch.
