Good Fishing Gets Great...Still No Snow

Capt. Paul Ollariu
February 22, 2009
Key West - Saltwater Fishing Report

Good Fishing Gets Great

In late February and March I have found bigger than life Tarpon back in the Gulf when all the
factors come together...water temperature, wind, sun and bait. West has been IT for me.
There are big barricudas and cobia in the channels and tarpon feeding along the grass flats
along with an occasional group of permit showing up. The sharks are active in the late afternoon.
Boca Grande has been excellent for channel fishing several days this past month. We crushed
the king fish offshore. One notable day we were fortunate to get a total of about 500lbs of
kings in the boat. WOW!!
This is that time of year when the fishing goes from good to great. We are all fully aware of
the current economic problems and fluctuations that make it difficult for you to enjoy those
outdoor activities (or is it addictions?) that you enjoy so much...like fishing. So, consider this.
More time on the water for less money, or just less money. See, here's the thing. I love fishing
as much as you do because I've been doing it for a long time, so we're not talking some new
captain who is locked into a price necessity. My current rates are $400 for a half day, which is
four hours or $500 for a three quarter day, which is six hours. Plus...I also have three boats and
fishing is not all you can do if you are so inclined. I recently had the opportunity to help a friend
pull some lobster and stone crab traps. It may not be your cup of tea, but hey...it's different.
Or, how about some snorkeling or maybe some spear gun fishing for hogfish or snapper?
Flexibility, customized trips for the family...flats, inshore, offshore...what would you like to do?
If you need help arranging any part of you trip here, just pick up the phone and call me. I
can help. Even if you don't need help, call me anyway and let's talk FISHING!!
And, always remember what us old captain wish for. "Faster horses, older whiskey, younger
women, more money and GREAT FISHING!

High tides and beautiful sunset

Professional guide in Key West for 20 years. Like most quides, Captain Paul Ollariu is a great fisherman. He grew up in Florida and has been fishing since he was nine years old. But, now, guiding gives Capt Paul greater pleasure than catching the fish. It is a very satisfying experience to see the smiling happy faces of his anglers when they have a tarpon on and the fish leaps out of the water. The look of anticipation as they bring the fish to the boat is something that stays in his
