Key West - Saltwater Fishing Report
Dec. 20, 2008
Baby Tarpon, Bonefish and Permit are available when the water warms in between cold fronts through this holiday season and into January. Here is a December baby Tarpon.
The cooler weather (average lows in the 60's, average highs in the low to mid 70's) usually continues through December and January. The best fishing is during those warm up periods in between cold fronts. There are always some Jack Crevalle, Shark and Barracuda to catch in the meantime!
The holiday season leading up to Christmas is usually a bit slow, but this allows us to catch up with family and friends. I always enjoy preparing my holiday newsletter and this year is no exception as there is some exciting news to report!
Capt. Dexter has put together some new Signature Gear for 2009! Here are some high quality caps by Imperial and fishing shirts by Simms to select from. First, here are the caps.
This one is a Relaxed, SPF 30 cap with neck cape and a 3 1/2" long bill, a CoolMax® sweatband and adjustable sizer draw-cord. It is super comfortable and sports the Key West Fly Fishing logo.($20)
This next one has a long bill with Tactel fabric that repels moisture and dries quickly. It has Cool-tech sweatband and micro-velcro closure and the Key West Fly Fishing logo.($20)
Next, here are The Flats Fishing Shirts by Simms with the new Key West Fly Fishing Logo ($50). They are the Simms 3X Dry Guide Shirt with all cotton comfort that sheds water on the outside, wicks moisture from the interior and dries incredibly fast.
Order yours today! The caps are one size fits all and the shirts are currently available in Large long sleeves and Extra Large long sleeves. (Capt. Dexter wears a large and it fits him great.) Just Go to the

Grand Slam Fly Fishing on the Turneffe Flats, Belize.
In September, 2008, Capt. Dexter Simmons joined an angler couple on a trip to Turneffe Flats, Belize. The fishing was great, and the hospitality was outstanding! We are planning a 2009 trip to Turneffe Flats for August or September and you can join us! The owner Craig Hayes has extended a generous offer for our group. They are going to run a 2 for 1 special with the price for two anglers being $5,200/week for August or September. So, divide that number in two and you get $2,600 per person! That is a $1300 discount off of the regular rate of $3900 per person. I think you will agree that this is a great deal. You can already tell that I am very excited about it! Call me or email me to sign up!
Bonefish and Tarpon Unlimited!
Bonefish & Tarpon Unlimited was developed for a simple reason – to support research, education, and conservation of bonefish and tarpon. At BTU's inception in 1998, little data existed on bonefish and tarpon, two of the world's most popular saltwater gamefish. BTU is made up of recreational anglers, guides, and marine industry leaders dedicated to increasing our knowledge of bonefish and tarpon biology so we may better manage these species and ensure the fisheries for future generations. (BTU is currently undergoing a name change to Bonefish and Tarpon Trust, with the same mission.) I encourage all anglers to join BTU!
Our Father (Mother) - Son (Daughter) Key West Flats Fishing Trips are now scheduled for throughout the summer, fall, winter, and spring.
