Key West - Saltwater Fishing Report

Christmas is just a few days away, hard to believe we still have 78 degree water temperature on the flats. The flats fishing has been satisfying. There have been a few morning full of tarpon action. Barracudas & jacks have been around on most days. I think the skinny water bonefishing has been an unexpected bonus for this time of year.

Historically, we have a bit cooler water by Christmas time. I'll take the warm days and cooler evenings. On land it's quite delightful. I do think we need a big cold front to stir things up a bit. We need some winter weather. If we get a big cold, front the fish will move out of the shallows for a few days as the water will be cold. This can make it slow for fishing, however, as a rule these big cold front bring strong north winds. Wind speeds well above 20 knots which makes getting off the dock quite tough, so with the bad will come the good. On the flip side of the cold front the warmer high pressure sets in and will gradually start to warm up the air and the water again. This is when the fish head back into the flats. Now, they have a fresh new attitude as well as a big appetite. Even in the warm and sunny Florida Keys we need a change of seasons. Not so much for us on land but for the fish on the flats.
