Hot and Heavy Tarpon Fishing

Capt. Lenny Leonard
June 16, 2014
Key West - Saltwater Fishing Report

It's been a while since I posted a report.
Tarpon season has a way of taking control of a guides life.
On the water before the sun comes up and if your lucky you get to still be on the water when the sun goes down.
Tarpon like many fish are most actively feeding in the dark.
I would take an educated guess and suggest that 75% of there food is consumed during darkness. For this reason we like to get out there on the water and capitalize on this early, pre dawn bite. This same explosive bight halogens again at sunset or just after. If your guide is booked up already during the day, ask him about night tarpon fishing. Not all guides offer this trip. To be honest it's tough to guide all day and then again at night. Burning the candle at booth end would be the catch phrase. I am one of those guides that burns that candle.
I love this shit. Being a tarpon guide is wonderful and I'm grateful each day, I get to be out there guiding.

This year, month of May in Key West was excessively windy.
More consecutive days of wind in May than I have seen before in nearly 18 years living down here. The fish were here cruising the ocean side flats, provided you could get out there a fish. Many days it was just not an option, with the big rolling waves crashing onto the flats. The back country did offer a bit of solace with some good tarpon catches.

We are just now midway through June and the tarpon are still pouring through the keys. In fact some days I'm seeing many mire fish than had been seen in May. I have have also seen and had my customer catch quite a few permit while tarpon fishing. Not exactly searching for the permit, however, take advantage of any permit shot you can get.

We had a few great tides for the worm hatch. The worms did hatch and the tarpon went into their usually epic frenzy feeding. It's always a fun time, just watching the tarpon during the worm hatch. Google the tarpon worm hatch for more information.

Looking forward to a several more weeks of great tarpon fishing.
