Key West - Saltwater Fishing Report

With water temperatures in the low to mid 80’s, the summer doldrums are only around the corner. However they are not here yet. Off shore the water is a cobalt blue and dolphin are everywhere. The larger fish are scattered well to the southeast along the “Wall” and along the “Ups and Downs”. The smaller schoolies are everywhere. There have been reports of marlin following the schools of the smaller dolphin. Bonito have been abundant, but the other pelagic species have been conspicuous by their absence. The mutton snapper spawn is not over yet. The up coming full moon should provide some fast and furious action in the cooler evening hours for those interested in dodging the sun and heat of the day. The grouper action has been holding up good with full bag limits being reached most of the time. Some of the red grouper have been running into the twenty-pound class. Yellowtail fishing has been a little tough with the pristine clear water along the reef.
Inshore, the tarpon migration is in full swing and the skiffs are lining up from the Marquises to Miami. The harbor is now in full swing and most boats are reporting red-hot tarpon action, finally. Permit are still plentiful along with bonefish, however expect the latter to become an early morning, late evening thing soon.
The gulf has provided some good action of late. Permit into the 30’s have been cooperative around some of the wrecks and some big mangroves have been coming in when you can get them away from the jewfish (goliath grouper). Some blackfin tunas and lots of bonito have been taken from behind the shrimp boats if you are willing to make a “long” run.
That’s it for now. Tight lines and good fishing.
