January 14, 2004

Color and Clarity: Blue with only a slight off color from cobalt.

REEF: Temperature: 74 degrees.

Color and Clarity: Clear blue with a visibility of 70 feet

INSHORE: Temperature: 74 degrees.

Color and Clarity: Clearing with a tinge of off-color green. Water turns opaque as you near Boca Grande Channel and the Quick Sands.

GULF: Temperature: 70 degrees.

Color and Clarity: Off-color near shore but clearing as you proceed offshore.

FISHING REPORT:

OFFSHORE: Sailfish continue to be spotty although reports of good action has come from further up the keys. Blackfin tuna and bonito are in good supply and responding well in the area around the End Of The Bar. The pilchard chummers are having the best results although trolling is producing some good catches. Wahoo have the main attention with some fish in the 50 pound plus range. The yellowfin tuna are still conspicuous by their absence. Kingfish are getting thicker on the edge of the reef with some real smokers starting to show. Dolphin have been in good supply with fish averaging 15 or more pounds. Some have topped the 30 pound mark.

REEF: Yellowtail snapper continue to be cooperative and 3 or more pound fish are the norm. Large Ciro mackerel continue to show all along the reef and trolled or live bait are producing well. The bottom fishing is holding up well with mutton snapper close to the reef and good numbers of big red snapper out deeper. Red, black, gag and scamp grouper continue to be very cooperative with live bait producing the better catches. Some of the grouper have been in the 30 pound range. Amberjack are showing around most structures and you can expect to have your arms stretched while fishing for grouper and snapper.

INSHORE: Jack Crevalle and small Spanish mackerel have been chasing bait along the face of the color change. This action may be located by the bird activity in Hawks Channel from Boca Grande to the Marquises. Surface plugs seem to be working best. The action dies off by noon on most days.

GULF OF MEXICO: The grouper bar remains good with some big smoker kings and the wrecks are producing some good catches of cobia. Mangrove snapper are spotty but some good catches have hit the docks when the wind cooperates.

FLATS: The water temperature has dropped a bit and the flats action has slowed a bit, however some of the guides have reported some fairly decent days.

That’s it for now. Tight lines and good fishing. Captain Ralph Delph
