Key West - Saltwater Fishing Report

The Gulfstream has pushed in tight against the reef from just west of Cosgrove light and from that area the current splits to the east and west. West of Cosgrove the west bound current has even a southwest tendency. Tuna, Little Tunny, some Wahoo and a few Sailfish along with some good size Dolphin are finding their way into the boats floating live baits. The westbound current is making for some hard bottom fishing, however some nice Black Grouper, some running well into the 40# class have been taken by anglers persistent enough to fight the current. A few Mutton Snappers up to 20# have been taken as well. East of Cosgrove, it has been purely pelagic species with Dolphin topping the bill. A few small Kingfish have been taken as well. Yellowtail Snapper along the reef is about all that has been showing up in the bottom fishermens boxes.
Inshore, some good catches of muttons have been taken on the patches and shallow waters to the west. Permit art starting to show around the wrecks, but they are not eating very well at this time. Another two weeks and they will be eating anything that you through to them, including small yellow jigs and flies.
The Gulf has been an expensive place to fish with fuel well over $3 dollars per gallon. The Blackfin Tunas have been North of the Dry Tortugas and the burn has been well over 100 gallons to bring back some sushi for the evening. Permit are starting to show here as well but not in the high numbers that you can expect latter on.
The flats down here have had some nice size permit, however most of the Tarpon fishing so far has been in the channels and basins. The main push of Tarpon should be starting up with the new moon of this new month. Shark fishing has slowed a bit, however, the black tips are here and they will really put on a show for the light tackle enthusiast.
That’s it for now. Tight lines and good fishing.
