Key West and Lower Keys

Capt. Dexter Simmons
November 5, 2000
Key West - Saltwater Fishing Report

Big Bonefish Invade Keys Flats

Bonefish have really turned on as of late, especially in the "backcountry" flats on the Gulf side of the lower Keys. The hot Bonefish action should continue as long as the winds are down and the temperatures stay in the 70's and low 80's.Anglers wishing to hook-up with these big Bonefish found in the Keys need to prepare by practicing their casting for distance and accuracy in windy conditions. Practice with a 7 or 8 weight rod with floating, weight forward "Bonefish-Taper" fly line. Learn to "double haul" for more distance. Days like today, when the wind decreases to about 5 to 10 mph, require long, accurate casts to spooky fish in shallow water. Remember, only the most practiced fly casters catch alot of fish on the flats.

Of course we are still in the best season for Bonefish and fall Permit, so if you have any spare time to fish, don't hesitate to make your way to the Keys. There are some great flats for tailing Bonefish and Permit in the Keys backcountry.

. There are also some Permit and baby Tarpon out there that may be willing to help you complete the Grand Slam. Before you travel to the Keys for some great fall Bonefish and Permit action, call Capt. Dexter Simmons for a live report 305-745-3304.
