Key West - Saltwater Fishing Report
Keys Need Banana(warm)Winds!
Every winter we experience period of cold (for the Florida Keys) weather. It usually comes in spurts puntuated by cold fronts, followed by warmer weather. Usually we get a "January thaw" a two week break from the cooler weather when the fishing in January can be excellent. This year has been the exception. We have not had many (maybe 5) days in January when the temperatures have been in the 70's.
Flats fish do not like water temperatures that are below 70 degrees. Bonefish, Permit, Tarpon, Barracuda, Jack Crevalle and even Shark hide in deeper water until it warms back up again. Yesterday, I tested the water temp during the middle of the day (about 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.) it read 63.5 degrees fahrenheit. I checked my backup thermometer to be sure, and I got the same reading. All I saw were four Barracudas and they ran away from me when I was 100+ feet from them, spooked by the cold water.
The flats fishing in the Keys will be very slow until the temperatures rise above 70 degrees again. There is some warming predicted for Super Bowl weekend, so we are hoping for the best! In the meantime, I suggest that all anglers tie up some of their favorite flys and best leaders, practice that double haul cast, and read up on the latest techniques in your favorite fly fishing book or magazine.
Tight Lines and warm winds! Never fear! February, March and April can be excellent for Tarpon, Bonefish and Permit! So contact your favorite guide and set up your dates before the February, March and April dates disappear too!I have just launched a new web page that is linked to this one entitled "Women Fly Fishing in Key West Paradise". For those interested in checking out some great catches by lady fly fishers,

The fishing should continue to be great for the time being. Here is an image of a fly fisher who had some February Tarpon Action that is on the new "Women Fly Fishing in Key West" page.Dawna landed this Tarpon in February, 1997! Before you
travel to the Keys, call Capt. Dexter Simmons for a live report 305-745-3304.
