Key West and Lower Keys

Capt. Dexter Simmons
November 7, 2001
Key West - Saltwater Fishing Report

Permit Days are Here!

As the cool fall winds spread down into the Keys from the northern climes, the Permit begin to migrate back into shallower waters and channels, leaving the Gulf wrecks deeper Atlantic reefs. It is during these fall months when Permit are showing again in greater numbers. As long as the water is clear enough to see fish (and the dirty waters from hurricane michelle have receded) then the Permit schools will move into the flats to feed.Dates are filling up for the Permit push this fall, winter and early spring. It is always a "roll of the dice" to get the fair, warm weather needed to find lots of Permit. Keep in mind that the best conditions for fishing Permit are clear skies with a "breezy" wind of 15 knots. This makes for challenging casting, however the Permit will be braver and less spooky. You will therefore be able to make shorter casts, because they will not hear us or see us until we are very close to them. So improve your odds for success by practicing the accuracy of your casts from 15 to 40 feet! Before you travel to the Florida Keys for some great Permit Fishing, contact Capt. Dexter Simmons for a "live report"! Call Capt. Dexter at 305-745-3304 or email Capt. Dexter Simmons Tight Lines and Screaming Reels!
