Key West and Lower Keys

Capt. Dexter Simmons
January 4, 2002
Key West - Saltwater Fishing Report

G'Day Mate!

As I prepare my tackle for a trip of a lifetime to Australia and New Zealand, I am struck by the excitement that builds up to a trip like this. Many preparations involve fly tying, leader tying, new fly lines joined with new backing, etc. In this instance, the excitement level is doubly juiced by the anticipation of fishing with some great anglers and guides from Down Under! In particular, Dean Butler will be guiding me for Black and Striped Marlin on fly out of Port Stephens, Australia. Dean has been part of many world record catches and is known world wide as a top marlin fly fishing guide and angler. After three days with Dean, I will be fishing with Sid Boshammer out of Hervey Bay, tackling the Fraser Island "Golden Trevally", small Tuna, and an occasional Permit or Bonefish that wanders by. After Fraser, we'll be on the Barrier Reef for several days looking for what ever is available! Then I the switch to fresh water, and four days fishing New Zealand's North Island with Alan Simmons (no relation) on the famous Tongariro River and its tributaries, a Zane Grey favorite, for big Rainbow Trout and Brown Trout. Wish me luck on this adventure!I will return to the Keys in a few weeks, but in the meantime I will be posting reports and pictures from downunder. January is a good time to vacation for me because the weather is a bit "off". Cold fronts produce cold winds that lower the water temperature into the 60's, forcing the fish deep. As many of you know, I prefer to fish for the Big Three (Tarpon, Bonefish, Permit) and they are relatively dormant during this cold weather (cold for the Keys that is!).So, G'day Mate! You may contact Capt. Dexter Simmons for a future fishing charter while I am downunder by email at [email protected]
