Key West - Saltwater Fishing Report

Think like Lefty!
Last week I read a piece by Lefty Kreh and found it to be right on target for the current fishing report. Lefty is a living legend in the Keys and elsewhere, well known worldwide for his excellence in writing about fishing, his photographic skills, and his fly fishing abilities. What I like most about Lefty is
his realistic approach to angling. When it comes to telling it like it is, Lefty pulls no punches. In the most recent issue (March/April, 2002) of Fly Fishing in Saltwaters, one of the subjects discussed in Lefty's column ("Q & A with Lefty Kreh", page 84) is the winter (December-March) fishing in South Florida and
the Bahamas. Lefty really nails it on the head when he says "Plan to stay at least six fishing days, realizing that at least two or three may not be favorable." Lefty realizes that cold fronts roll through on a regular basis during this period of time and in between fronts you might get warm weather and lighter winds to fish.
Fishing when the weather turns cold is tough in South Florida, the Keys, and the Bahamas, but there is always something to catch!
So that brings us to the fishing report for the beginning of March. And yes, we have been struggling with cold fronts on a regular basis, HOWEVER we are still catching fish! Jack Crevalle, Ladyfish, Pompano, Barracuda, and Shark have been feeding despite the cool water (below 70 degrees fahrenheit). You may
