Key West and Lower Keys

Capt. Dexter Simmons
March 11, 2005
Key West - Saltwater Fishing Report

Permit Staged and Ready to March with Warm Weather!

March 11, 2005Fly Fishing for Permit in March is always a wait and see game. Weather has alot to do with the quality of the fishing and this year is no exception to that rule. We have had a long Winter of unseasonably low temperatures. The water temps today are still in the mid to high 60's, not ideal for Permit fishing. However, as the water warms up again, the Great Pompano will turn on and show on the flats. Hope springs eternal for an extended period of SE winds. In the meantime, crank out your best Merkin-crab imitations! I also like to use the Deep Water Gotcha shrimp imitations for Permit that are on the deeper edges or for schooling Permit in channels. The Gotcha imitates a swimming shrimp and can be stripped away from the Permit often inducing a strike.Casting from the foredeck of "FlatsMaster" in THE CAGE gives anglers additional height and stability so they may easily spot fish in the clear, shallow waters of the Keys. December, January and February are generally great months to catch Permit, Barracuda, Shark, Jack Crevalle, Pompano, Sea Trout, Ladyfish, and Lane Snapper. Bonefish and Tarpon are also available with mild weather. So plan your trip now. Permit will be Marching all winter and spring here in the Keys. Tarpon and Bonefish will be actively feeding in the shallows as the water warms into the 70's and low 80's this Spring. There are some April and June dates still available, so contact Capt. Dexter Simmons at 305-745-3304 for more info. Bonefish will be schooling all over flats as the water temps rise to the mid to high 70's. Our Father (Mother) - Son (Daughter) Key West Flats Fishing Trips are now scheduled for throughout the summer, fall, winter, and spring. Dexter Simmons for a future fishing charter by telephone at 305-745-3304 or by email at [email protected]
