Key West and Lower Keys

Capt. Dexter Simmons
January 12, 2006
Key West - Saltwater Fishing Report

Winter Fly Fishing in the Keys

Jan. 12, 2006 Winter fishing in the Keys is usually a mix of predators (Shark, Barracuda, Mackerel, Jacks) and the Big Three (Tarpon, Permit, Bonefish) depending upon the fluctuation of temperatures from cool to warm driven by cold weather fronts bringing low pressure, then high pressures ridges sweeping through the Florida Peninsula. When the water temps dip into the 60’s, then it is usually predator fishing. In between cold fronts as high pressure builds, our winds will clock around to the East-Southeast and if they stay there for a few days, then we will see increasing temps driving the water back into the low to mid and sometimes high 70’s on the flats bringing the Big Three back into the shallows. So, if you hit it right, then you can find some pretty outstanding fishing in January and February in between the cold fronts. Tarpon will soon be swarming in big numbers into the Gulf side channels and basins as the January thaw melts into late winter and early spring here in the Keys. Bonefish are already being caught on the flats on warm afternoons. Permit are also being caught on the flats when they are not totally spooked. Contact Capt. Dexter Simmons by casting your net line to http://www.keywestflyfishing.com or by email to [email protected]. Happy Fishing!
