Key West and Lower Keys

Capt. Dexter Simmons
February 12, 2006
Key West - Saltwater Fishing Report

11 Bones on a February Afternoon

Feb. 12, 2006. They were swarming like bees around a hive. Must've been the afternoon sun raising the water temp a few degrees. Enough to turn them on and make them hungry during the falling tide. We were looking on the right flat at the right time. And we scored big time. Ten or Eleven Bones in about 90 minutes of stalking, all of them taken from the boat. Sharks were after them. Cuda's were lurking waiting for bloody scraps,

but we caught and released each one with care to revive them in good health.Typically, Bonefishing in February is a bit tough because the water temps are barely in the low 70's. Bones really like water temps above 75 degrees fahrenheit. The warm up from the mid 60's to nearly 70 that afternoon triggered their natural feeding instinct. And it was like a jailbreak,

with Bonefish running around everywhere we looked on the flat. We had three double hook - ups during the frenzy and in the picture below, Gill holds a Bone while Dewey is behind him fighting another. As soon as the waters warm up again after the current cold front, we should see some pretty good Tarpon fishing during the end of February or early March. Permit will be

marching across the flats in big numbers as they participate in their annual pre-spawning feed.
