Key West - Saltwater Fishing Report

Permit Like Windy Conditions.
March 26, 2007. Permit are the main course on the Key West flats these breezy March days!
February and March have been very good for Permit fishing here in the Lower Keys, Key West and the Marquesas. In the above photo, Scott Livingston of Idaho caught this 20 pound Permit on the backcountry flats in a 23 knot Northeast wind. Congratulations Scott on your first Permit on fly!
Catching this fish during such a windy day is not unusual, as Permit are caught more often during windy days that calm days. They have tremendous senses, and they can easily spook from boat noise, shadows of fly line over head, or from flys or line that land on top of them. If you are intimidated by the fresh winds while Permit fly fishing, change your attitude! You should be encouraged by these conditions and practice your wind casting so that you
can cast into a 20+ knot wind and throw the line 30-40 despite that wind. Those who are accomplished at wind casting catch more Permit on fly, it is that simple. When you are ready to book a charter or just talk fishing, contact Capt.
