Key West and Lower Keys

Capt. Dexter Simmons
October 1, 2007
Key West - Saltwater Fishing Report

Tailing Bonefish + Schooling Permit + Baby Tarpon = Fall Grand Slam Season!

October 1, 2007. Luke Lucas was recently fishing with Capt. Dexter and caught this nice 7 pound Bone on the backcountry flats! It is tailing Bonefish season!Tom Connor and Capt. Dexter were recently treated to a day of endless tails on the backcountry flats of the lower Florida Keys. At first light, just after 7 a.m., Capt. Dexter and Tom found schools of bonefish on a transition flat that was quickly draining. With just an hour of falling tide remaining, Tom hooked up a big Bonefish on Capt. Dexter's Sugarloaf Special Bonefish Fly. The fish ran and ran and ran till all the fly line had left Tom's hands and looped around the butt of the rod causing an immediate break off! Not to worry, we lamented, look! More fish were pushing toward us. Tom switched rods, and after a location change and a few more casts he hooked up again! This time the line cleared nicely, the Bonefish was landed and Tom was that much wiser. A short time later, Permit were the quarry and Tom cast to a school in a small cut. One of the larger Permit turned, ate the offering and sped off up current. We fought that fish around the mangrove roots, up and down the cut, and onto the flat until for 20 minutes or so. The fish finally succumbed to Tom's pressure, and the 25 pound Great Pompano was released with a strong swoosh of the tail. We then turned to the Tarpon hunt to complete the slam. The first two locations showed no Silver King. We then proceeded to a barrier island with a coral edge flat. A few Permit showed first and Tom tried to hook up again with Mr. Rubber Lips, but they seemed pre-occupied. He then spotted some approaching fish along the bank. At first they looked like big Barracuda, but as they drew to within casting range, we could clearly see that they were small Tarpon. Tom made a cast toward the fish, but his line landed beyond the leading fish, spooking the pod of Silver King! We had our shot at the slam, but no luck. It had been a pretty good day on the flats. Tom was elated about catching Bonefish and Permit, then having a shot at the flats grand slam. "This is the best day fishing on the flats that I have ever had and I have been coming down here to fish for 30 years!" We shook hands and planned another outing for the future. It is always a fun day on the water for Capt. Dexter, and there will be many more! It is Grand Slam season in the Keys. Two slams were recorded at the recent one day Superfly event in Key West. This fall will be great for grand slam angling, so make your plans now! When you are ready to book a charter or just talk fishing, contact Capt.
